Ayrani: Move Over Kefir - We’ve Got a New Probiotic Drink in Town
I learned about Ayrani while living in Cyprus, an island in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea with the Most. Beautiful. Beaches. Ever. (and amazing food, culture, warm people. Should I go on?). When the heat soars, the older generation pull out an ancient and simple yogurt drink and blender. It is consumed all over the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean - Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Iran and more. It is called Ayrani, Ayran or Ariani. The name changes, but the recipe stays the same. These people know how to quench their thirst naturally, organically and using an age-old method. No need for sugary sports drinks. Probiotic-filled, cold and creamy, this is what I make for my family and self when I’m feeling a bit flushed.
Ayrani is a refreshing summer drink made with only 3 ingredients: diluted Greek yogurt, salt and dried mint. Slightly salty, rather than sweet, it may take some getting used to. But it’s worth it. A comparison of those above-mentioned electrolytes of Gatorade (the de facto electrolyte drink of the West) versus Ayran is below.
Ayran is a natural, healthier alternative to Gatorade. It’s also super simple to make.
Ingredients
¼ cup your favorite brand of whole milk Greek yogurt
1 cup water
Salt to taste (¼ teaspoon for me)
Dried mint, if desired
Several Ice cubes to make it thicker and colder
Directions
Add all of the above in a blender and whirl to oblivion for a couple of seconds. Think of all the electrolytes, protein and probiotics you are rehydrating your body with.
Good health to you and your gorgeous bump!
